Sonic Adventure was Sonic's return to the video game industry after a long hiatus. Sonic Adventure was an explosive comeback for the hedgehog, and he even brought some of his friends a long with him. In this game Dr. Robotnik has released an evil creature named Chaos to help him conquer the world. Sonic faces off against this creature and defeats him but little does he know the beast is only getting stronger as the days go by. Meanwhile Knuckles tries to rebuild the Master Emerald after a run in with Chaos. When Sonic is chilling at a hotel he spots Tails as he crashes into the Emerald Coast, he goes after Tails and saves him. They go to Tails' workshop to see his latest experiment, however an univited guest is there, Eggman battles them but manages to steal the Chaos Emerald and feed it to Chaos. Chaos gets stronger, and the doctor says he'll get even more powerful once he finds all of them. So it's a race against time, and a long the way they'll all meet some interesting characters, one of them is a confused robot codename Gamma.

There are 6 playable characters in the game, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big the Cat, and E-102 Gamma.5 of the characters besides Sonic need to be unlocked, they are unlocked when you meet them in the storyline. Each character has different types of levels, Sonic has his speed levels where he must reach the goal, Tails must race Sonic and beat him to the goals, Amy must run away froma crazy robot, Knuckles must find the pieces of the Master Emerald, Gamma is searching for his purpose, and Big is just looking for his pet Froggy by fishing for him.

This game introduced the world to Chao, virtual pets you can raise as side missions in the game. You can transfer them to your VMU (Virtual Memory Unit, you youngins don't know about that)  and raise them. The VMU Chao Garden was a whole new game altogether, similar to pokemon except with cute little Chao's.
